The former Brazilian president detained after being declared a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
